Chalkina
A musical superlative…
Goumenissa has its own musical neighborhood, or rather the neighborhood of musicians. Two hundred, popular instrumentalists compose a distinct image and make their own history. Their musical instruments are primarily wind instruments, but there are also other categories. Wherever there is a feast, wherever there is a festival, wherever there is a celebration, the company of traditional sounds is not missing from Goumenissa. Over time, however, a category of musical instruments stood out from the rest, and became known throughout Greece under the name “Chalkina” and in particular “Chalkina of Goumenissa”. Various circumstances helped to highlight them, but the main weapon of their recognition was the original talent of the musicians who highlighted them.
The “Chalkina” have traveled to America, Australia and almost all over Europe giving concerts with great success. The way the various traditional and non-traditional purposes are played is distinct but also idiosyncratic. It is not possible, not only to describe in words, but even to mention such a thing. The melody of the brass touches the soul of the listener, creating in him a sweet disturbance, a wave of joy and sadness. Of course, the amazing thing is to find someone listening to thirty or even forty “coppers” at the same time. There, silence is the ultimate expression of musical pandemonium.
