Seat of the Metropolis
he Holy Monastery of Panagia Goumenissa is also the seat of the Metropolis of Goumenissa, Axioupoleos and Polykastro. The Holy Monastery of Panagia of Goumenissa is the most historic monument in the area of Paionia. It has been designated by a decision of the Ministry of Culture, like other buildings of the town of Goumenissa, a preserved monument.
In the first years of its operation, it was Catholic and was granted to the Iberon Monastery of Mount Athos in 1346 AD, while it was the occasion for the founding of the homonymous city. The miraculous icon of Panagia Goumenissa is honored 4 times a year:
• Of Ypapanti, February 2 with a vigil.
• On the first Sunday of March with litany.
• On the third day of Easter with litany.
• The three days of August 15 (feast of the Dormition of the Virgin), 16 & 17 August (feast of the Transfiguration of the Virgin).

The building complex of the monastery develops in a verdant environment around the church of the Dormition, where the miraculous icon of the “Panagia Goumenissa” and relics of many saints are exposed for worship. Inside the Church, an elaborate wood-carved iconostasis and many icons from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved. Today, main church (“katholikon”) a building of the end of the 17th century AD.
