Holy Church of Saint George Goumenissa
Heart of Hellenism in difficult historical periods
The Metropolitan Church of Saint George in the center of Goumenissa built in 1864 and in the five years of its construction, until 1869, the inhabitants of the city contributed financially and with their personal work. It is an impressive church, one of the grandest in Central Macedonia, built on the model of Saint Minas in Thessaloniki and the Patriarchal Church of Saint George in Constantinople.
Until the liberation of the city, in 1912, it played an important spiritual and supportive role in the life of Christians in the area and until 1991 it was a parish church, when it was converted into a Metropolis and classified as a monument.
Saint George of Goumenissa will soon be the first monumental holy church in the country that will operate with geothermal energy. All the energy needs of the historic temple of Goumenissa will be covered by a pioneering geothermal project for greek standards.
