Yapatzi
watermill
Museum of the Macedonian struggle…
There were a total of nine watermills, and they were located on the axis of the Goumenissa-Grivas road. They were not only productive and commercial centers, but also points of gathering and culture. In addition to the production of flour, they also functioned as sesame mills, while during the 2nd world war they were also used for the production of electricity.
Yapatzi watermill is a restored, traditional monument and is located in Goumenissa on the road to Griva. This is the water mill of the Traianos Yapatzis family. It was built at the end of the 18th century and operated from 1860 to 1970, when it stopped producing flour for good, but continued to operate until 1980 (grinding animal feed). The watermill is a traditional monument and is the only one that has survived from the watermills that existed in the area. It was restored in 2008 by the third generation of the Giapatzi family, the brothers Christos and Grigoris. It joined the OPAACH program and was fully financed, precisely because it is not a production unit, but for the preservation of a wonderful traditional architectural monument, another link in the tourist development of the area and in the visitation of Goumenissa. Restoration work began in March 2008 and was completed in July, and it has been open to visitors since then.

The watermill is particularly well-kept and, apart from its value as a unique traditional architectural monument of the area, it functions as a beautiful time machine, as the tasteful restoration has highlighted the entire traditional production process.
